Leadership Transition and Organizational Restructuring
Strategic Plan

AK Cultural Planning partnered with AIA New York and the Center for Architecture in 2023 to guide the organizations through an executive leadership change and reconceptualize how they might better collaborate in the future.

The consultant team worked closely with the boards of both organizations to assess market positions, internal and external challenges, and opportunities to grow membership, participation, profile, and influence. The research findings report, Toward a Joint Strategic Plan, presented insights from 11 research inputs that engaged more than 550 people through 50+ consultations and a survey of over 500 members and visitors. It also included analysis of 35 relevant peer organizations and operating models.

The research paved the way for iterative strategic discussions that produced a new programming model and recommended strategic priorities for the next five years. The new concept cross-pollinates and refines AIA and CFA’s existing programming, partnerships, and member services. The outcomes are designed to lean into next-generation practices in a rapidly evolving design and architecture field while drawing broader audiences into these dynamic conversations.

In launching the plan, AIANY/CFA stated:

“This strategic plan marks another important milestone. AIA New York and the Center for Architecture have a purposeful and thoughtful path toward our shared future. Through this process, we have explored our value as two organizations that are stronger together, and we have considered how to lean into the possibilities that our unique reciprocal relationship holds as we advance shared goals. With this new shared strategy, we will advance the value and practice of architecture to promote just and sustainable communities.”
