Strategic Plan
Founded in 1878, the Columbus Museum of Art is the oldest art museum in Ohio, with a strong regional collection and particular depth in American and European Modern Art. Over the last decade, CMA has distinguished itself through a deep commitment to participatory learning and community engagement, and continues to recenter its identity around distinctive collections, exhibitions, and programs.
AK Cultural Planning was selected to develop a Strategic Plan to guide CMA through a new phase of institutional growth. The work began with a thorough institutional assessment: engaging stakeholders and external experts, evaluating the regional and national context, and identifying gaps, needs, and opportunities, including those related to CMA's physical campus. Research findings were presented to the Board and Planning Committee, followed by a Futures Workshop to evaluate options and set strategic direction.
The final strategy was laid out an inspiring vision led by the Director and Curatorial and Learning teams, the desired impact which was grounded in research, and clear programmatic goals and priorities. Financial modeling was integral to the process and addressed organizational structure, programmatic expansion, fundraising, and partnerships.
The companion Implementation Plan translated strategy into action, synchronizing CMA's priorities over a five-year horizon with metrics for monitoring change over time. Organized as a practical reference document, it specified timelines, budget allocations, and staff responsibilities, giving leadership a clear and energizing road map for the work ahead.
