Collection Storage and Preparation Work Space Assessment and Space Planning

A museum and independent research library in New York City, the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City offers the public close encounters with great works of human accomplishment. Its extensive collections of manuscripts, rare books, drawings, and other works of art comprise a unique record of civilization, encompassing hundreds of thousands of objects across eight curatorial areas. Increasing capacity for collection storage, handling, and care across the institution was highlighted as an objective in the 2025-2029 Strategic Plan.

AK Cultural Planning partnered with a team led by Cooper Robertson/Corgan on a comprehensive assessment of long-term collections care needs. Working alongside the architects, as well as engineers, security, and real estate consultants, we participated in staff interviews and facility reviews, surfacing operational insights and potential shifts in practice that might impact the Morgan's long-term finances.

Drawing on expertise in museum operations, exhibition management, and budgeting, we collaborated with Morgan staff to develop assumptions and long-range pro forma operating budgets for multiple storage scenarios, with a comparative analysis highlighting the long-term impact of each option on the annual budget. This work is supporting the leadership team in planning for future institutional needs.
