Visitor survey, market analysis, best practice research, and financial modeling to inform strategic priorities and campus development

Storm King Art Center is a 500-acre outdoor museum and sculpture park located in New York’s Hudson Valley, where visitors experience large-scale works and site-specific commissions under the open sky. Since 1960, Storm King has been dedicated to stewarding the landscape and supporting artists and their ambitious works.

In 2016, AK Cultural Planning was hired to collaborate with Storm King staff and planners to consider the options and recommend priorities for campus development. Our analyses supported the development of a phased building strategy that aligns market demand with programmatic, financial, and operational realities.

The work, which was carried out over a year, was research driven, including visitor surveys, market and contextual analysis, and best practice studies on multiple relevant topics. Research was presented in a series of charrettes and followed up with an intense budget modelling process that engaged every department head in the development of assumptions. At the conclusion of the project, a phased financial model with attendance projections was presented to the Board and Senior Staff and is currently being used to guide development.
