Program Review for Vizcaya Village and Campus Visitor Experience Planning
Vision and Strategic Plan 2026–2028
Following consistent growth and success as a leading attraction in Miami cultural destination, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens engaged AK Cultural Planning in early 2024 to reassess the assumptions in the Vizcaya Village Master Plan and develop an integrated campus-wide visitor experience. We worked closely with the leadership team to review and refine program specifications informed by evolving institutional needs as well as major cultural shifts and transformations in the museum field. Specifically, the project scope included:
Assessment of the regional context and local markets in which Vizcaya operates to identify gaps, needs, and synergies; including refined audience assumptions and visitation projections
Analysis of potential new exhibition spaces and uses for the collection, evaluating options and scenarios for an exhibition program that will supplement the future visitor experience
Collection storage assessment to identify needs and storage typology options as well as a preferred long-term model based on financial and operational scenario planning
Space planning specifications for living collections and related education programs
Assessment of long-term needs for back-of-house spaces with specifications
Visitor experience strategy and synchronized space program using scenario planning and options analysis to evaluate solutions with staff teams
AK Cultural Planning was invited back to collaborate with Board and staff leadership to develop a 20-Year Vision and 3-Year Strategic Plan. Titled “Invention, Resilience, and Connection,” the vision and detailed implementation plan are guiding institution building and the integration of Vizcaya’s extensive capital projects through 2028.
Current work includes developing a 10-year business plan that integrates the annual operating, capital construction, and fundraising models.
